February 2020 Library Event

February was all about “Squishy Science” !

February’s library event was all about “Squishy Science”! EcoReach member Mia lead an event inspired by an activity posted in Scientific American. Titled, “Squishy Science”, this activity was all about extracting DNA from strawberries! We had around 15 students participate in this fun and very interactive lesson.

Students watch the process of extracting DNA from strawberries

Students were able to participate in almost every step of the process! They got to mush up strawberries, make the funnels, and strain the fruit. By the end of the activity students could see milky, white DNA strands at the bottom of their bottles. The final step of the process was using a bamboo skewer to separate the DNA from the rest of the strawberry.
